LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — Nevada has joined a multi-state coalition suing the White House over the dismantling of the U.S. Education Department.

Attorney General Aaron Ford said he and 20 other attorneys general were going to court to block the major workforce reductions spearheaded by the Trump administration.

The department, which employs over 4,000 people, will cut its staff by nearly half, with just under 2,000 employees facing layoffs or opting for buyouts and early retirement.

"We want education to be moved back where the states run education, where the parents of the children will be running education," President Donald Trump told reporters in the Oval Office on Wednesday.

In a statement, Ford said gutting the Education Department would harm Nevada students who come from low-income families or rely on special education.

"I was a public school math teacher, and I'm the father of three sons who attended Nevada's public schools," Ford said. "I know firsthand what happens when politicians play games with education — our kids pay the price."

The coalition is asking a judge to issue an order that would block the workforce and program cuts, alleging the Trump administration's actions are unconstitutional.
