FOX 5 Vegas: Salvation Army of Southern Nevada hosts pop-up food pantries in Las Vegas

Organization provides free food boxes to families facing mid-month shortages

The Salvation Army of Southern Nevada hosted the second in a series of pop-up food pantries Friday at its headquarters near Charleston and Rancho.

Assistance is available to anyone who finds themselves short on both money and supplies. Attendees received a box filled with rice, beans, canned vegetables, cereal, pasta and pasta sauce.

Amanda Fusco, family services coordinator for the Salvation Army of Southern Nevada, said the goal is to make it easy for people to get the help they need.

“Obviously, you know, the grocery costs, gas prices, just getting to the store. People don’t even have cars to be able to get to and from to get their groceries,” Fusco said. “So, just again, accessibility is really what we’re trying to aim for and just making sure that we can reach out to as many people as possible.”

Volunteers also help people fill out SNAP benefit paperwork during the pop-ups.

Fusco said about 40% of the people being served are either minors or seniors.

Another pantry is planned for Friday, May 15. The Salvation Army of Southern Nevada’s website will have the location and times.

Fusco said there are several ways to support the organization.

“Obviously, monetary donations are amazing, but your time is just as valuable,” Fusco said. “We always love our volunteers. We cannot do this without you. Or if you feel it in your heart to host a food drive for us, even, that would be incredible.”
